World Cup 2026: How Dutch legend Van der Vaart was embarrassed after Morocco eliminated Netherlands
Former Netherlands international Rafael van der Vaart admitted Morocco fully deserved their World Cup victory after the Atlas Lions eliminated the Dutch side from the 2026 tournament.
Morocco secured qualification for the Round of 16 after defeating the Netherlands 3-2 on penalties at Monterrey Stadium following a 1-1 draw after regular and extra time in their Round of 32 clash.
The result completed another major achievement for the Atlas Lions and also placed Van der Vaart in an uncomfortable position after comments he made before the match attracted significant attention.
Pre-match comments return to haunt Dutch legend
Ahead of the game, the former Real Madrid and Netherlands midfielder appeared highly confident about the Dutch team’s chances against Morocco.
“I don’t mean to joke, but all Moroccans who are not up to the level of the Dutch national team will play for Morocco,” Van der Vaart had said before the encounter.
He also added: “If the Netherlands wants to win the tournament, there is no need to worry about Morocco.”
According to French outlet “Foot Mercato”, the remarks caused widespread reaction before the match and were later viewed by many supporters as comments that backfired after the Dutch exit.
Van der Vaart praises Morocco after defeat
Following the match, Van der Vaart struck a completely different tone while analysing the game on Dutch broadcaster NOS.
“Honestly, Morocco deservedly qualified. The Moroccans were the better team from the first minute,” he admitted.
“I am very disappointed; it was a very bad match for the national team.”
The former midfielder also criticised the Netherlands’ approach after taking the lead during the contest.
“It’s true that you take the lead, but then you rely solely on luck to qualify. Morocco was the better team,” he added.
Morocco’s victory has continued Africa’s strong presence at the 2026 World Cup, with the Atlas Lions once again earning praise for their organisation, discipline and competitive mentality on football’s biggest stage.
