DR Congo coach Sébastien Desabre learns of father’s death after England World Cup defeat

DR Congo head coach Sébastien Desabre was informed of his father’s death during his post-match press conference following his side’s 2-1 defeat by England in the World Cup knockout stage.

The news came at the end of a deeply emotional evening in which the Leopards came within touching distance of a historic upset against the 1966 world champions.

Brian Cipenga had given DR Congo a first-half lead, capitalising on a bright start that unsettled England and briefly put the African side in control of the contest.

But England responded after the break, with captain Harry Kane leading the turnaround. The forward struck twice in the second half to complete a comeback victory and send his side into the Round of 16.

England will now face Mexico in the next round as Thomas Tuchel’s side continue their bid to win a first World Cup title since 1966.

While speaking to journalists after the final whistle, Desabre was informed that his father had passed away, bringing a sudden and painful personal dimension to an already difficult sporting night.

Despite the defeat, DR Congo’s campaign was widely seen as a statement of intent, with their performances underlining the growing competitiveness of African football on the global stage.

England’s win keeps their tournament ambitions alive, but the focus inevitably shifted towards Desabre, with messages of sympathy expected from across the football world.

Our thoughts and condolences are with Sébastien Desabre and his family during this difficult time.
