England captain Harry Kane has praised DR Congo goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi-Nzau following his outstanding performance during their Round of 32 clash at the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Wednesday.
The two sides faced off at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in a fiercely contested encounter that saw England fight back to secure a 2-1 victory and advance to the Round of 16.
Mpasi-Nzau Produces Brilliant Goalkeeping Display
Kane started for the Three Lions and played the full match, while Mpasi-Nzau also completed the entire contest for DR Congo after delivering one of the standout goalkeeping performances of the tournament so far.
The DR Congo shot-stopper frustrated England throughout the opening half with a series of crucial saves that helped his side head into the break with a 1-0 advantage.
Even after England turned the match around in the second half, Mpasi-Nzau continued to produce impressive stops to keep his team in contention until the closing stages.
Kane Applauds DR Congo Goalkeeper
Despite scoring twice to lead England’s comeback victory, Kane made sure to acknowledge the quality shown by the DR Congo goalkeeper after the match.
Speaking during his post-match interview, the England striker praised Mpasi-Nzau for his performance between the posts.
“Congo goalkeeper… congrats. Credits to him. He did some great saves,” Kane said.
England March Into Round of 16
England eventually overcame the difficult challenge posed by DR Congo thanks to Kane’s second-half brace, sealing their place in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Three Lions will now prepare for another major test as they take on Mexico in the next stage of the tournament.
