Pitso Mosimane linked with Ceramica Cleopatra coaching job

Former Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Pitso Mosimane has emerged as a leading contender for the Ceramica Cleopatra managerial position, with reports in Egypt suggesting the South African could be set for a return to the country’s top flight.

According to Egyptian media, Ceramica Cleopatra have identified Mosimane as one of their preferred candidates as they prepare for the possible departure of current head coach Ali Maher.

Maher is reportedly being lined up to take charge of Egyptian giants Pyramids FC, where he could replace Krunoslav Jurčić, the coach who guided the club to CAF Champions League glory.

The anticipated move has prompted Ceramica Cleopatra to begin searching for a suitable successor.

Mosimane, who has been without a club since leaving Iranian side Esteghlal FC in January 2025, is believed to be among the frontrunners for the role.

Speaking to Egyptian outlet Yalla Kora, a source claimed discussions between the club and the former Al Ahly coach have already taken place.

“Ceramica Cleopatra is currently negotiating with several coaches to compensate for the possible departure of Ali Maher to Pyramids,” the source said.

“South African coach Pitso Mosimane has been nominated to lead Ceramica Cleopatra in the new season.

“Negotiations have already taken place with the South African coach and he has agreed to lead Ceramica Cleopatra in the new season.

“There is more than one coach nominated to lead Ceramica Cleopatra if Ali Maher leaves to coach Pyramids.”

Should the move materialise, Mosimane would make a return to familiar surroundings in Egyptian football, where he enjoyed remarkable success with Al Ahly, winning multiple domestic titles and two CAF Champions League crowns during his tenure.

The 60-year-old could also reunite with South African forward Fagrie Lakay, who is currently part of the Ceramica Cleopatra squad.

Widely regarded as one of Africa’s most accomplished coaches, Mosimane has built an impressive career that includes sustained success with Mamelodi Sundowns and Al Ahly.

His proven record on the continent continues to make him one of the most sought-after managers whenever coaching vacancies emerge across African football.

Neither Ceramica Cleopatra nor Mosimane has officially commented on the reported negotiations.
