Ghana’s Kwadwo Opoku lands Greek Super League move to Panetolikos
Ghanaian forward Kwadwo ‘Mahala’ Opoku has completed a permanent move from CF Montréal to Greek Super League outfit Panetolikos F.C., bringing an end to his spell in Major League Soccer.
The Canadian club confirmed the transfer on Monday, adding that they will retain a percentage of any future transfer involving the 24-year-old as part of the agreement.
Opoku leaves Montréal after making 42 regular-season appearances, scoring seven goals and providing four assists during his time with the club.
Montréal pay tribute to departing forward
Montréal’s managing director of recruitment and sporting methodology, Luca Saputo, thanked the Ghanaian for his commitment and professionalism throughout his stay.
“We would like to thank Mahala for his contributions and professionalism during his time with the club,” Saputo said.
“We wish him the best of luck in the next chapter of his career.”
The move offers Opoku his first opportunity to test himself in European football after establishing his reputation in North America.
From Ghana to MLS success
A graduate of the Attram De Visser Soccer Academy in Ghana, Opoku first made his mark with Los Angeles FC, where he emerged as one of the league’s brightest young talents.
During his three seasons with LAFC, he scored nine goals and registered six assists in 60 MLS appearances, helping the club secure an MLS Cup and Supporters’ Shield double in 2022.
His impressive performances also earned him a place in the league’s prestigious 22 Under 22 rankings, where he finished ninth before being traded to Montréal ahead of the 2024 campaign.
Fresh challenge in Greece
Opoku now begins a new chapter with Panetolikos, aiming to make his mark in the Greek top flight and continue the steady progression of his career.
His departure comes as Montréal head into the 2026 FIFA World Cup break sitting 11th in the MLS Eastern Conference, having collected 14 points from their opening 14 league matches.
