World Cup 2026: We want more – Cape Verde star Deroy Duarte ahead of Round of 32 clash with Argentina
Cape Verde midfielder Deroy Duarte believes his side can continue their fairytale run at the 2026 FIFA World Cup by causing a major upset against defending champions Argentina in the Round of 32.
The Blue Sharks booked their place in the knockout stage for the first time in their history after holding Saudi Arabia to a goalless draw, a result that secured second place in Group H.
Having already become the smallest nation ever to reach the World Cup knockout rounds, Cape Verde now face an even greater challenge against Lionel Messi-led Argentina next weekend.
Despite the daunting task ahead, Duarte insists the island nation is relishing the opportunity to make more history.
“Our first objective was to go to the World Cup, our second was to pass the group stage, and this is what we did.
“Everything is an honour and a reward, and we see Argentina as a game like this — another chance to make history.
“So why not? We will give everything and then at the end of the game we will see.”
Cape Verde head coach Bubista also expressed confidence ahead of the clash with the South American giants, stressing that his side fears no opponent.
“To us, nothing is impossible,” said the Cape Verde coach, as per Pan Africa Football.
“We, the people of Cape Verde, have to be proud of what the team has done. First of all, we are proud to be able to play Argentina.”
Cape Verde’s remarkable World Cup journey has already captured global attention, and victory over Argentina would rank among the greatest upsets in tournament history.
