World Cup 2026: England vs D.R Congo – Preview, analysis and kick off time
England will continue their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign on Wednesday when they take on Democratic Republic of Congo in the Round of 32 at Atlanta Stadium.
The Three Lions advanced to the knockout rounds after topping Group L with victories over Croatia and Panama before drawing against Ghana. DR Congo, meanwhile, secured qualification as the highest-ranked third-placed side after a dramatic group-stage campaign that included a crucial victory over Uzbekistan.
While England enter the contest as favourites, Congo arrive with growing confidence and the belief that they can continue one of the tournament’s most remarkable stories.
DR Congo’s Remarkable Rise on the Global Stage
This tournament already represents a major milestone for DR Congo, who have reached the knockout stages of the World Cup for the first time in their history.
Their only previous appearance came in 1974 when the nation competed as Zaire. That campaign ended painfully with defeats in all three group matches, but more than five decades later, Congo have returned as a transformed football nation.
Much of that progress has been credited to head coach Sebastien Desabre, who took charge after the team failed to qualify for the 2022 World Cup under Hector Cuper. Since arriving, Desabre has rebuilt the side into one of Africa’s emerging powers.
Congo reached the semi-finals of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations before sealing qualification for this World Cup through the play-offs, defeating Jamaica 1-0 in the final.
Their route to the Round of 32 this summer has been far from straightforward. A 1-1 draw against Portugal and a narrow 1-0 defeat to Colombia left them needing a result against Uzbekistan, and they delivered impressively with a 3-1 victory to book their place in the knockout rounds.
England Looking to Maintain Momentum Under Tuchel
England have quietly built one of the most consistent records at the tournament under Thomas Tuchel.
The Three Lions are unbeaten in 11 competitive fixtures since the German coach took charge, winning 10 and drawing one. Only Ron Greenwood and Roy Hodgson have enjoyed longer unbeaten starts in competitive matches as England manager.
England’s control during the group phase was reflected in their possession statistics. They ranked third overall at the tournament with an average of 65.3 percent possession, while DR Congo ranked 38th with 38.5 percent.
Tuchel’s side also handled the pressure of qualification comfortably. A 2-0 victory over Panama confirmed top spot in Group L and narrowed down their potential Round of 32 opponents to either Senegal or DR Congo.
After Congo finished third in Group K, the matchup was officially confirmed.
First Ever Meeting Between the Two Nations
This will be the first meeting between England and DR Congo in international football.
It will also be England’s second encounter with African opposition at the 2026 World Cup after facing Ghana during the group stage. The last time England played two African teams at the same World Cup was in 1990 against Egypt and Cameroon.
England have won both of their previous World Cup knockout matches against African nations, defeating Cameroon 3-2 in the quarter-finals in 1990 and beating Senegal 3-0 in the Round of 16 at the 2022 tournament.
For DR Congo, this will be their first ever World Cup knockout fixture. African teams have faced former World Cup winners in knockout matches on 10 previous occasions, with Morocco’s penalty shootout triumph over Spain in 2022 remaining the only successful progression.
Kane Chasing More World Cup History
Harry Kane continues to strengthen his legacy on the international stage after becoming England’s all-time leading scorer at the FIFA World Cup with 11 goals.
Another goal in Atlanta would move him level with Geoff Hurst on four World Cup knockout-stage goals, leaving only Gary Lineker ahead of him in England’s all-time rankings for knockout goals at the tournament.
DR Congo’s biggest attacking threat remains Yoane Wissa, who has scored three of the nation’s four goals at the 2026 World Cup. The forward is averaging a goal every 90 minutes in the tournament after managing only three goals during the entire 2025-26 club season for Newcastle United.
Key Players Could Shape the Contest
Elliot Anderson has emerged as one of England’s standout performers in midfield during the group stage. He leads all England players for line-breaking passes, possession won and duels won at the tournament.
Only Ecuador midfielder Pedro Vite matched Anderson’s numbers across all three categories during the group phase.
For DR Congo, winger Brian Cipenga produced one of the performances of the final group-stage round when he completed six successful dribbles against Uzbekistan in his World Cup debut. Only Paraguay’s Julian Enciso recorded more successful dribbles in a single group-stage match at this year’s tournament.
