World Cup 2026: Cody Gakpo remains with Netherlands squad despite loss of unborn child
Liverpool winger Cody Gakpo has taken the decision to remain with the Netherlands squad at the World Cup following the heartbreaking loss of his unborn child, in a moment that has cast a sombre shadow over his tournament involvement.
The Dutch Football Federation confirmed that Gakpo will continue to be part of the national team setup in North America, while receiving full support from staff and teammates as he navigates the devastating news with his family.
The tragedy was first shared publicly by his partner, Noa van der Bij, who announced the passing of their unborn son in an emotional social media statement. The couple had been expecting their second child, having welcomed their first son, Samuel, in 2024.
Her message read: “With broken hearts, we announce the devastating news that our baby passed away during pregnancy. Thank you all for your support. Elijah Raphael Gakpo. Forever loved, forever our son.”
Netherlands rally around forward in difficult moment
The Dutch federation has emphasised that Gakpo is being given space, privacy, and emotional support, with no pressure placed on his immediate availability for football matters.
While he remains with the squad, his involvement in the upcoming knockout fixture against Morocco is still uncertain. The Round of 32 match is scheduled for Tuesday, leaving his participation dependent on his personal readiness rather than sporting considerations.
Gakpo has been a central figure in the Netherlands’ campaign so far, starting all group-stage matches and scoring twice in their emphatic 5-1 win over Sweden, underlining his importance to the team’s attacking structure.
Football secondary as support becomes priority
Inside the Dutch camp, focus has shifted firmly towards supporting the forward rather than preparing tactical adjustments around him. Teammates and staff are understood to be standing firmly behind him, with the federation stressing unity and compassion as key priorities.
Gakpo’s decision to stay with the squad, rather than immediately returning home, reflects both his personal resilience and the close bond within the national team environment. However, there remains full acceptance that football commitments are secondary at this stage.
Head coach Ronald Koeman is expected to manage the situation carefully, ensuring the player is not rushed back into action before he is ready, either mentally or emotionally.
