Cape Verde captain Ryan Mendes accused of rape and assault in New Zealand
Cape Verde national team captain Ryan Mendes is under investigation following allegations of rape and physical assault made by a woman who claims the incident occurred during the country’s tour of New Zealand in March.
According to the complainant, Mendes allegedly forced his way into her hotel room before sexually and physically assaulting her.
The woman further alleges that she possesses medical and forensic evidence that supports her account of the incident.
The allegations have prompted an investigation by New Zealand Police, which reportedly began in April.
The matter has also been brought to the attention of world football governing body FIFA and the Cape Verde Football Federation through formal complaints submitted by the complainant.
At this stage, no charges or court rulings have been announced, and authorities have not reached any conclusions regarding the allegations. The case remains under active investigation.
Neither Mendes nor representatives of the Cape Verde Football Federation have publicly responded to the accusations.
The allegations come as a significant development involving one of Cape Verde’s most prominent football figures.
Mendes has been a key player for the Blue Sharks over the years, captaining the national side and playing a central role in several of the country’s major international campaigns.
As investigations continue, authorities are expected to examine the evidence presented and determine whether any further legal action will be taken.
Meanwhile, Cape Verde, who are making their debut at the 2026 World Cup, will come up against Argentina in the Round of 32, a game Mendes will lead the side as skipper.
Given the ongoing nature of the case, all allegations remain unproven, and no findings of wrongdoing have been made against Mendes.
