World Cup 2026: Ronald Koeman expects tough last-16 clash with Morocco
Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman has promised an entertaining Round of 16 encounter against Morocco after his side secured top spot in Group F with victory over Tunisia.
The Dutch booked their place in the knockout stage as group winners following a 3-1 success over Tunisia in their final group match on Thursday. The result means the Oranje will now face Morocco, who progressed as runners-up in Group C, in Monterrey, Mexico.
Koeman was pleased with both the result and the manner of his team’s performance, highlighting the importance of finishing the group stage strongly.
“We secured a comfortable victory against Tunisia. We took all three points without receiving any cards, nor registering any injuries or suspensions,” said Koeman.
The Netherlands coach also praised his players for maintaining their discipline and delivering an effective display.
“We played a good match, scored three goals and secured first place in our group,” he added.
Attention has now turned to the Round of 16, where the Netherlands will face one of Africa’s strongest sides. Koeman acknowledged Morocco’s quality but insisted his team is equally capable of progressing further in the tournament.
“We know that Morocco is a solid team, with high-quality players. But we are also a difficult team to play against. We are ready for this match and we have the ambition to continue our journey in this World Cup,” he stated.
The fixture is expected to be one of the standout ties of the Round of 16, bringing together two teams that impressed during the group stage.
The Netherlands enter the knockout phase after finishing at the top of Group F, while Morocco secured second place in Group C to earn their place in the last 16.
With both nations aiming to extend their World Cup campaigns, the meeting in Monterrey promises to be a highly anticipated contest.
Koeman’s side will look to build on the confidence gained from their convincing victory over Tunisia, while Morocco will seek another memorable result as they continue their pursuit of a place in the quarter-finals.
The outcome will determine which side keeps its World Cup dream alive, with Koeman making it clear that his players are fully prepared for what he expects to be a demanding and closely contested encounter.
