World Cup 2026: Thomas Tuchel opens up on fury at Djed Spence amid Thomas Partey row

Thomas Tuchel has moved to calm speculation that he singled out Djed Spence during England’s 0-0 draw with Ghana, after the defender was seen receiving animated instructions from the touchline.

The England manager insisted the reaction was purely tactical, not personal, as debate continued over a tense moment that briefly stole attention from the match itself.

Spence’s selection had already drawn interest after a turbulent build-up involving Ghana midfielder Thomas Partey, with the defender notably refusing to shake hands during pre-match formalities.

English media have been vocal about Partey, who has been accused of rape in the United Kingdom and was denied entry to Canada.

First tournament start under the microscope

The England full-back had impressed off the bench against Croatia to earn his first major tournament start, and initially produced a steady display before being withdrawn in the second half for Nico O’Reilly.

However, his performance was punctuated by visible frustration from Tuchel, who was seen demanding more urgency from the right flank.

The England coach had already been caught on camera during an earlier training session urging Spence to “wake up”, signalling a growing expectation on the 25-year-old to deliver higher intensity at international level.

Tactical demands behind sideline frustration

Tuchel later dismissed any suggestion of a falling-out, instead framing his animated instructions as part of his communication style in a loud stadium environment. He stressed that his frustration stemmed from England’s need for quicker attacking transitions and wider build-up play.

“I wanted him to be more engaged in the attacking phase. To start our attacks a bit wider and to have more runs through the last line,” Tuchel explained. “I have to scream because nobody hears me otherwise. It’s all good with Djed.”

He added that substitutions were planned to maintain attacking momentum, noting that O’Reilly’s introduction almost produced a decisive breakthrough late in the game.

England’s search for sharper edge continues

Despite controlling large spells of the match, England again struggled to convert possession into goals as Ghana held firm in a disciplined defensive display.

Tuchel’s side created late chances but lacked cutting edge in the final third, leaving further questions about attacking cohesion ahead of tougher fixtures.
