Kaizer Chiefs confirm departure of George Matlou after four seasons
South African giants Kaizer Chiefs have confirmed the departure of midfielder George Matlou ahead of the new football campaign.
The enterprising midfielder leaves the Amakhosi at the expiration of his contract in June, bringing an end to his four-year stay with the Soweto-based club.
“After four seasons with Kaizer Chiefs, George Matlou’s contract will not be renewed when it expires at the end of June 2026,” the club stated.
“The 27-year-old attacking midfielder joined the Glamour Boys from Swallows FC in July 2022 and played an important role in the squad that lifted the Nedbank Cup during the 2024/25 season.
“We thank George for his commitment and contribution to Amakhosi and wish him well in his future career.”
Matlou’s departure signals the beginning of what is expected to be an important rebuilding phase for Kaizer Chiefs as the club prepares for the upcoming campaign.
The midfielder arrived at Naturena in 2022 after impressing with Swallows FC, where his technical ability, creativity, and composure in midfield attracted attention from several clubs in the Premier Soccer League.
His move to Chiefs was viewed as an opportunity for the talented playmaker to establish himself at one of the biggest clubs in African football.
Although Matlou experienced periods of inconsistency and injury struggles during his time at the club, he remained a respected member of the squad and contributed in several important matches over the past four seasons.
One of the biggest highlights of his spell at Kaizer Chiefs came during the 2024/25 campaign when Amakhosi secured the Nedbank Cup title. The triumph ended a long wait for silverware and represented an important moment for both the club and its supporters.
Matlou played a supporting role in that successful cup run, helping provide depth and creativity in midfield as Chiefs battled through difficult fixtures on their way to lifting the trophy.
Despite showing flashes of quality during his stay, the midfielder struggled to cement a permanent starting role in the team, with strong competition for places in the attacking midfield positions.
Kaizer Chiefs are now expected to continue reshaping their squad as the club looks to build a team capable of challenging consistently for domestic honours and competing strongly in continental football.
The decision not to renew Matlou’s contract may also open opportunities for younger players within the squad or create room for new signings ahead of the transfer window.
At 27 years old, the attacking midfielder still has several years ahead of him and is expected to attract interest from clubs within the PSL and beyond.
His technical qualities, experience, and versatility in midfield could make him an appealing option for teams looking to strengthen their attacking options ahead of the new season.
For Kaizer Chiefs, Matlou’s exit marks the first confirmed departure of the offseason, with more squad changes potentially expected in the coming weeks as the club prepares for another important chapter in its rebuilding process.
