Manqoba Mngqithi in line for Kaizer Chiefs assistant coach job

South African trainer Manqoba Mngqithi has emerged as a potential candidate to join Kaizer Chiefs’ technical team ahead of the new season.

The experienced coach is reportedly being considered for the assistant coach role under newly-appointed Amakhosi head coach Fernando da Cruz following the club’s failure to secure the return of Arthur Zwane.

Kaizer Chiefs had been linked with bringing Zwane back to Naturena, but the former Amakhosi mentor recently extended his contract with AmaZulu, effectively ending speculation over a possible reunion.

As a result, the Soweto giants have continued exploring other options to strengthen da Cruz’s backroom staff, with several names believed to be under consideration.

Among those mentioned is development coach Dillon Sheppard, while Mngqithi’s extensive experience has also placed him firmly in contention.

The former Golden Arrows tactician is highly regarded within South African football after enjoying successful spells in the Premier Soccer League, most notably with Mamelodi Sundowns.

During his time at Sundowns, Mngqithi gained valuable continental experience through the CAF Champions League and other intercontinental competitions — an area Chiefs are reportedly eager to strengthen as they look to rebuild into consistent challengers both domestically and in Africa.

His tactical knowledge, leadership qualities and understanding of the local game are believed to make him an attractive option for Amakhosi as they reshape their technical structure under da Cruz.

Kaizer Chiefs are expected to finalise their technical team in the coming weeks as preparations continue for the upcoming Betway Premiership campaign.
