World Cup 2026: Jerome Boateng unconvinced by Ghana despite late winner against Panama

Former Germany defender Jerome Boateng has cautioned that Ghana’s path at the World Cup remains challenging despite their dramatic opening victory over Panama.

The Black Stars began their Group L campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 win in Toronto on Wednesday.

Midfielder Caleb Yirenkyi scored deep into stoppage time to seal all three points after a contest that appeared destined to end goalless.

Speaking to Flashscore after the match, Boateng admitted he was pleased with the result but believes Ghana still have significant hurdles to overcome in the tournament.

“As for Ghana, I have to be honest: they didn’t seem irresistible to me. It’s a very young team, and right now they’re dealing with six or seven injuries among their most important players.

“They’re not playing with their best lineup, but for me there are no excuses. I’m happy they won their first match, and I hope they can pick up more points in the group. It will be tough because of the absence of these key players who play for top European clubs.”

Ghana’s injury concerns have been a major talking point since the start of the tournament. Creative midfielder Mohammed Kudus and defender Mohammed Salisu are among the notable absentees.

Alexander Djiku also missed the competition through injury.

The Black Stars will now look to build on their winning start when they face England in their next Group L fixture.
