World Cup 2026: Hossam Hassan hails Egypt fans after historic victory over New Zealand
Egypt coach Hossam Hassan has credited the passionate support of the Pharaohs faithful for inspiring his side’s dramatic 3-1 comeback victory over New Zealand at the FIFA World Cup on Monday.
The win marked a historic moment for Egypt, as the North Africans secured their first-ever victory at the World Cup after overturning an early deficit.
Speaking after the match, Hassan praised the fans for creating an atmosphere reminiscent of home.
“We felt as if we were playing at Cairo International Stadium because the crowd made us feel at home,” Hassan said in a television interview.
After falling behind, Egypt responded impressively, with goals from Mostafa Zizo, captain Mohamed Salah and Mahmoud Hassan “Trezeguet” sealing a memorable comeback and significantly boosting the team’s hopes of progressing to the knockout stages.
Hassan also paid tribute to his backroom staff for their contribution to the team’s success.
“I want to thank all the staff who are deploying huge efforts and created a great atmosphere,” he added.
Egypt began their World Cup campaign with a 1-1 draw against Belgium before securing a deserved victory over New Zealand in their second Group G fixture.
The Pharaohs now sit top of Group G with four points, two ahead of both Iran and Belgium, who shared the spoils in a goalless draw earlier on Monday. New Zealand remain bottom of the standings with one point.
