World Cup 2026: Lamine Yamal backs Spain to bounce back after Cape Verde shock

Spain star Lamine Yamal remains confident that La Roja will prove why they are considered one of the favourites to win the 2026 FIFA World Cup despite their disappointing start to the tournament.

The European giants were held to a surprise 0-0 draw by Cape Verde in their opening Group H match, one of the biggest upsets of the competition so far. Spain dominated possession but were unable to find a way past an inspired Cape Verde defence and goalkeeper Vozinha. The result has increased the pressure ahead of Sunday’s crucial encounter with Saudi Arabia.

Yamal, who came off the bench during the second half against Cape Verde, has moved quickly to reassure supporters that Spain will respond positively.

“On Sunday, we will go to achieve that victory, and of course, we will bring out our playing style and show who we are.”

The Barcelona teenager believes Spain’s identity and quality will eventually shine through as the tournament progresses.

Despite the frustration of the opening result, Yamal also called for unity between the players and supporters as the team looks to get its World Cup campaign back on track.

“Together we will overcome everything. I’m also sure that we will all be together on July 19,” he added, referencing the date of the World Cup final and expressing his belief that Spain can go all the way.

There is further encouragement for Spanish fans regarding Yamal’s fitness. The 18-year-old arrived at the tournament still recovering from a hamstring injury, prompting coach Luis de la Fuente and the medical staff to carefully manage his workload.

Yamal played only 19 minutes against Cape Verde but immediately added creativity and unpredictability to Spain’s attack. His introduction stretched the Cape Verde defence and created more space for teammates, leading many observers to call for him to start against Saudi Arabia.

Reports from the Spanish camp suggest the winger is expected to play a much larger role in the next match. While the coaching staff remain cautious because of the risk of aggravating his injury, De la Fuente has indicated that Yamal could feature for around 45 minutes as he continues his gradual return to full fitness.

Spain know another disappointing result could significantly complicate their path to the knockout rounds. With Saudi Arabia and Uruguay still to come in Group H, securing three points has become a priority.

For Yamal, however, there is no sense of panic. The teenager remains convinced that Spain possess the quality, experience and talent to challenge for the trophy.

Now, with a bigger role seemingly awaiting him, the Barcelona prodigy has the opportunity to help lead Spain’s response and reignite their World Cup campaign when they face Saudi Arabia.
