World Cup 2026: Spain coach De la Fuente optimistic of Lamine Yamal’s availability for Saudi Arabia clash
Spain coach Luis De la Fuente has expressed optimism about Lamine Yamal featuring in their crucial second Group stage match against Saudi Arabia at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The enterprising winger, who plies his trade for Barcelona made substitute appearance in their opening game against Cape Verde, which ended in a pulsating goalless draw.
Ahead of the Saudi Arabia match, De la Fuente acknowledged that the situation surrounding the 18-year-old winger is “complicated,” but expressed cautious optimism that he will be available for Sunday’s fixture, possibly in a limited role.
“We need to assess Lamine Yamal’s situation before our next match against Saudi Arabia,” De la Fuente said.
When asked whether the Barcelona winger could be fit enough to play around 45 minutes, the coach responded positively but with caution, suggesting Spain may manage his minutes depending on his condition. “Of course, something like that,” he added.
Yamal featured from the bench in Spain’s previous Group stage match against Cape Verde national football team, coming on in the 71st minute. However, he was unable to influence the game as Spain were held to a frustrating 0-0 draw, a result that increased pressure heading into their next outing.
The coaching staff are now weighing up how best to use the young winger, who remains one of Spain’s most dynamic attacking options but is being carefully managed due to fitness concerns at a crucial stage of the tournament.
Spain’s medical and technical teams are expected to make a final decision closer to matchday, with Yamal’s availability seen as a key factor in their attacking strategy against Saudi Arabia.
