Ronaldo faces questions after Portugal draw with DR Congo

Cristiano Ronaldo’s role in the Portugal team has come under renewed discussion after the forward struggled to make an impact in the 1-1 draw against DR Congo at the 2026 World Cup.

Portugal were unable to secure victory against a Congolese side making its return to the World Cup after 52 years, with Ronaldo’s performance becoming one of the main talking points after the match.

The 41-year-old forward, who is appearing at his sixth World Cup alongside Lionel Messi, was criticised after missing two opportunities and failing to influence the game in his usual attacking role.

During the match, captain Bruno Fernandes showed frustration on one occasion when he appeared to be in a better position, adding to the wider discussion about Ronaldo’s place and involvement in the team.

Statistics from the match highlighted Ronaldo’s difficulties, with the Portuguese captain recording just 25 touches of the ball, the lowest among Portugal players who remained on the pitch for more than 45 minutes.

Despite the criticism, Portugal coach Roberto Martínez defended his striker and insisted Ronaldo remains an important figure for the national team.

“We need to use all the players on the field. The center forward needs to be close to the penalty area and we need to get the ball to him.”

Martínez also explained why he had no intention of replacing the veteran forward during the match, pointing to his experience and ability to influence games.

“It would make no sense to take the world’s top scorer out of a match where the team needs to score.”

The Portugal coach added:

“In moments like this, Cristiano’s experience in the box is important. The way he draws defenders is important. When you’re looking to score, you need Cristiano.”

Ronaldo’s career numbers remain among the greatest in football history, with 143 goals in 229 appearances for Portugal, but questions about his role have continued as the team looks towards the future.

Portugal now need to respond quickly after dropping points, with their next World Cup fixture against Uzbekistan on Tuesday in Houston before facing Colombia in their final group match on 27 June in Miami.
