World Cup 2026: Hervé Renard embraces tough Tunisia challenge ahead of Japan clash
Newly appointed Tunisia head coach Hervé Renard has acknowledged the difficult task ahead as he begins his tenure with the North African nation during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Renard was unveiled as Tunisia’s new coach following the dismissal of Sabri Lamouchi, who was relieved of his duties after the team’s heavy 5-1 defeat to Sweden in their opening World Cup match.
The loss extended a worrying run for Tunisia, who had also suffered a 5-0 defeat to Belgium in their final warm-up game before the tournament, marking a second consecutive match in which they conceded five goals.
Speaking at his first press conference since taking charge, Renard admitted the challenge would be far from straightforward but said the prestige and passion of the World Cup convinced him to accept the role.
“At the moment, we need to be focused on ourselves. We still have a few days to be ready,” Renard said.
“It’s a World Cup. I know the passion around this event. That’s what motivated me to come, and it’s a challenge which isn’t easy.”
The experienced Frenchman is now leading a team at the World Cup for the third time and faces an immediate test as Tunisia prepare for their next Group-stage fixture against Japan.
