World Cup 2026: South Africa coach Hugo Broos targets strong response against Czech Republic
South Africa coach Hugo Broos is confident Bafana Bafana will produce a much-improved performance when they face Czech Republic in their second Group A match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Belgian tactician remains optimistic despite seeing his side suffer a disappointing 2-0 defeat to co-hosts Mexico in their tournament opener last Thursday.
Goals from Mexico condemned South Africa to an opening-day loss, leaving Bafana Bafana with work to do in their remaining group-stage fixtures. However, Broos believes his players have enough time to recover physically and mentally before Thursday’s crucial showdown at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.
The veteran coach acknowledged the disappointment within the camp following the defeat but insisted that his players would be ready to bounce back.
“You know, there’s still seven days, those guys are professionals, if you can’t recuperate in seven days for another game, that will be ridiculous,” Broos said ahead of the clash.
“I don’t think that will be a problem, I think we need the next two days to get over the disappointment of today and also the fatigue.
“But from Saturday and Sunday, the guys will be ready again, to have good training, and also we have to work on our offensive game, because it was not enough in this game.”
Broos was particularly concerned by his team’s attacking output against Mexico, with South Africa struggling to create enough clear-cut opportunities despite showing flashes of promise during the encounter.
The coach now hopes his side can become more effective in the final third as they seek their first points of the tournament.
The upcoming clash against Czechia is shaping up to be one of the most significant matches in Group A. Like South Africa, the Europeans also suffered defeat in their opening fixture after losing 2-1 to South Korea.
With both teams still searching for their first points, Thursday’s encounter carries enormous importance in the race for qualification to the knockout stage. Another defeat for either side would leave their World Cup hopes hanging by a thread.
Broos will therefore be expecting a strong reaction from his players, who know a positive result could revive their campaign ahead of their final group match.
Despite the setback against Mexico, the South African coach remains convinced that his squad has the quality and character to recover.
Bafana Bafana have earned praise in recent years for their resilience and team spirit, qualities Broos will be relying on as they attempt to keep their World Cup dream alive.
The match between South Africa and Czech has been scheduled for Thursday at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, with both nations desperate to secure a result that could reignite their hopes of progressing beyond the group stage.
