Yassine Bounou speaks ahead of Morocco's World Cup opener

Moroccan goalkeeper Yassine Bounou has expressed confidence ahead of his country’s opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, insisting the Atlas Lions are fully prepared to face Brazil and determined to remain true to their identity on football’s biggest stage.

Morocco begin their Group C campaign on Sunday against the South American giants, with expectations high following the team’s recent progress on the international stage.

Speaking before the encounter, Bounou stressed that the squad is approaching the tournament with belief and without fear of any opponent.

“We came to this World Cup to enjoy ourselves and give our best. We don’t fear any team and we will face Brazil with our own personality. We want to win and continue our journey,” Bounou told the media.

The Al-Hilal goalkeeper highlighted the confidence within the squad and pointed to the work completed in preparation for the tournament as a key reason for optimism.

“We have prepared well for this match and we have what it takes to win. We are a great team, with excellent players in every position.”

Bounou’s comments reflect the mood within the Moroccan camp as the Atlas Lions prepare for one of the toughest opening fixtures of the competition.

Despite facing one of world football’s most successful nations, the goalkeeper indicated that Morocco’s focus remains firmly on its own strengths rather than the reputation of its opponents.

Attention has also been given to the weather conditions in the United States, which have been discussed by several teams participating in the tournament. However, Bounou dismissed any concerns that the climate could affect Morocco’s preparations or performance.

“African teams are used to this type of climate. It’s normal for us and we can play in any conditions.”

The experienced goalkeeper also revealed that the squad has already had sufficient time to settle into its surroundings before the start of the competition.

“All the players have settled in. Our goal is to have a great World Cup.”

Morocco will now look to translate that confidence onto the pitch when they face Brazil in their opening Group C fixture, with Bounou making clear that the Atlas Lions intend to compete with ambition, belief and their own footballing identity as they begin their World Cup campaign.
