World Cup 2026: Carlos Lampe identifies weaknesses in Algeria ahead of Argentina clash
Bolivia captain Carlos Lampe has offered a detailed assessment of Algeria ahead of the Fennecs’ opening match against Argentina, highlighting what he believes are several areas of vulnerability despite the North Africans’ convincing victory over his side.
Lampe faced Algeria only days before the start of the tournament and, although Bolivia suffered a heavy defeat, the experienced goalkeeper believes the match provided useful insight into the strengths and weaknesses of Vladimir Petkovic’s team.
The 39-year-old suggested that Algeria’s pressing game was not as effective as it could have been during parts of the encounter.
According to his assessment, Bolivia were able to find opportunities to build from the back, particularly down the right side, during the first half.
Drawing on observations reported by Footmercato, Lampe argued that Algeria appeared vulnerable when forced to retreat towards the left side of their defensive structure. He also described the team as being “a bit static” in its organisation at certain moments of the game.
Despite those criticisms, the Bolivian goalkeeper was quick to underline what he considers one of Algeria’s greatest strengths.
He pointed to the team’s ability to recover possession and launch rapid counter-attacks, a quality that could prove particularly dangerous against high-level opponents.
Lampe’s analysis also focused on several key individuals within the Algerian squad.
He identified Algerian forward Mohamed Amoura as a major threat, praising his alertness during transitions and his ability to exploit space on the counter-attack. The striker’s pace and movement were highlighted as important weapons within Algeria’s attacking setup.
The goalkeeper also drew attention to the attacking runs of French-Algerian defender Rayan Aït Nouri, while suggesting that limiting the influence of captain Riyad Mahrez could be crucial for any opponent seeking to contain the Fennecs.
In addition, Lampe highlighted Farès Chaïbi, describing him as a creative player capable of unlocking defences, and also pointed to Algerian winger Anis Hadj Moussa for his ability to threaten goal.
As Algeria prepare to begin their World Cup 2026 campaign against the reigning world champions, Lampe’s observations offer an outsider’s perspective on a side hoping to make a strong start in Kansas City.
The Fennecs now turn their full attention to Argentina, with the opening fixture set to provide the first major test of their ambitions at the tournament.
