World Cup 2026: Cyle Larin scores historic first goal as Canada hold Bosnia
Cyle Larin marked a major personal milestone by scoring his first World Cup goal as Canada drew with Bosnia and Herzegovina in their opening Group B match at the 2026 tournament, also taking his international tally beyond 30 goals.
The Southampton forward struck in the 79th minute at BMO Field to level the match, becoming only the second Canadian player ever to score at a World Cup, and ending a long wait for his first goal on football’s biggest stage.
Larin had previously featured at the 2022 World Cup, where he played against Belgium, Croatia and Morocco, but had been unable to register a goal during Canada’s campaign in Qatar.
His breakthrough in 2026 therefore represents a significant moment in his international career.
The striker’s equaliser against Bosnia and Herzegovina ensured Canada secured a valuable result in their opening fixture as they began their Group B campaign on home soil in Toronto.
Larin’s goal also took him to 31 international strikes in 91 appearances for Canada, further underlining his importance to the national team since his debut in 2014 in a friendly against Hungary.
In doing so, he joined a select group of Canadian players to have scored at a World Cup.
The only other player to achieve the feat remains Alphonso Davies, who scored against Croatia during the 2022 tournament.
For Canada, Larin’s moment provided another landmark in their growing World Cup history, as the team continues to build on its recent appearances at the global stage.
His equaliser ensured that their opening Group B match did not end in defeat, keeping their campaign on steady footing.
The goal was the culmination of Larin’s persistence throughout the match, as Canada pushed for a way back after falling behind.
His late finish reflected his experience and positioning inside the penalty area, delivering a moment of relief for the home supporters.
As the tournament progresses, Canada will look to build on this result, with Larin expected to play a central role in their attacking plans.
His form and experience will be key as the team attempts to progress beyond the group stage.
For Larin personally, the goal stands as a defining achievement, not only ending his World Cup scoring drought but also strengthening his place in Canadian football history as one of the country’s leading international scorers.
