Hussein Ammouta appointed Al Ahly head coach on one-year deal

Egyptian giants Al Ahly have confirmed the appointment of Moroccan tactician Hussein Ammouta as their new head coach, signing him on a one-year contract reportedly worth $1.2 million.

The 54-year-old replaces Danish coach Jess Thorup, who has departed the club on mutual agreement following a disappointing spell that fell short of expectations.

Thorup’s tenure ended after Al Ahly failed to secure qualification for the CAF Champions League and also lost the Egyptian Premier League title to arch-rivals Zamalek, a setback that triggered internal review at the Cairo-based club.

Ammouta’s arrival signals a decisive shift in direction for one of Africa’s most decorated and demanding football institutions. The Moroccan coach, known for his disciplined tactical approach and success in African competitions, is expected to be tasked immediately with restoring domestic dominance and re-establishing Al Ahly’s presence on the continental stage.

Club officials are understood to have moved quickly to secure his signature as part of a broader restructuring plan aimed at stabilising performance levels and rebuilding a winning culture ahead of a crucial new season.

Al Ahly, widely regarded as one of the continent’s football powerhouses, have endured an uncharacteristically turbulent campaign, with inconsistency on both domestic and continental fronts exposing gaps that the new technical leadership will now be expected to address.

For Ammouta, the appointment represents one of the most high-pressure roles in African football. Expectations at Al Ahly remain uncompromising: trophies are not an ambition but a requirement.

As pre-season preparations begin, attention will turn to how quickly the Moroccan coach can imprint his philosophy on a squad eager to reclaim its dominance and restore pride after a difficult campaign.
