I will be at the next FIFA World Cup in 2030 – Omar Artan vows after emotional homecoming in Mogadishu
Somali referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan has spoken of resilience and renewed determination after returning to a hero’s welcome in the capital, following the disappointment of missing out on officiating at a major international tournament.
The 34-year-old was among a selected pool of African officials initially appointed for duty at football’s global showpiece under the supervision of FIFA and CAF, but his journey was cut short after he was reportedly barred from travelling, ending his hopes of stepping onto the world stage.
Despite the setback, Artan received a warm and emotional reception on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, upon his arrival in Mogadishu. Crowds and officials gathered at the airport, describing his return as “heroic” and celebrating his achievements as a source of national pride.
Speaking shortly after his return, the referee expressed deep gratitude to Somali leaders, the sporting community, and supporters who stood by him during what he described as a difficult period.
“First of all, I sincerely thank the leaders and the entire sports family of Somalia. I want to express my gratitude to the Somali people for their unwavering support, encouragement and solidarity,” he said.
He also acknowledged the backing of state institutions and football authorities, adding appreciation for the government, the Minister of Youth and Sports, and the Somali Football Federation for their support behind the scenes. He further extended thanks to FIFA and CAF for their continued engagement throughout his ordeal.
“They never left me alone,” he said. “Insha Allah, I promise you all that I will be at the next FIFA World Cup in 2030. I will return stronger and better prepared. I will continue to work hard, carry the Somali flag with pride and I will never give up.”
Artan’s return has sparked widespread discussion across Somalia’s sporting circles, with many viewing his experience as both a setback and a powerful symbol of perseverance. His message of determination has resonated strongly with fans who see him as part of a growing generation pushing Somali football onto the global stage.
