World Cup 2026

Egypt goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy believes the Pharaohs are capable of achieving something special at the 2026 FIFA World Cup as they target a place in the knockout stages.

The veteran shot stopper says the experience gained since Egypt’s last World Cup appearance has left the squad better prepared to compete against the world’s top nations.

Experience Has Made Egypt Stronger

Reflecting on Egypt’s previous World Cup campaign, El Shenawy admitted that a lack of experience was a major challenge for the team at the time.

“We’ve lacked experience. We hadn’t qualified for the World Cup in 28 years, and it was the team’s first time competing at that level, so it was only natural that we lacked experience. But we’ve gained a great deal of experience since that tournament, playing matches against major international teams.”

According to the Al Ahly goalkeeper, Egypt now has a much clearer understanding of what is required to compete successfully on football’s biggest stage.

Knockout Stage the First Objective

El Shenawy believes Egypt must set ambitious targets ahead of the tournament, beginning with qualification from the group stage.

“Today, the picture is much clearer for us, and we can achieve something special at the upcoming World Cup. Of course, we have to define our objectives and ambitions to reach the latter stages of the tournament. Right now, it’s essential that we qualify for the knockout rounds.”

The goalkeeper’s comments reflect growing confidence within the Egyptian camp as preparations continue for the competition.

Veteran Trio Ready to Lead

El Shenawy highlighted the importance of experienced players within the squad, particularly those who have already played at a World Cup.

Alongside Mohamed Salah and Mahmoud Hassan “Trezeguet”, the goalkeeper believes he can help guide younger teammates through the unique challenges of the tournament.

“Mohamed Salah, Trezeguet and I have played in the World Cup before, and we can pass that experience on to the rest of the squad and help them acclimatise to the tournament environment.”

He added that facing elite opposition during the tournament would only strengthen Egypt’s readiness.

“We’re preparing to face some very strong sides at the World Cup. And that will work in our favour, because we’ll go into the tournament at peak readiness.”

Seeking a Historic Achievement

The 2026 tournament will mark El Shenawy’s second appearance at a FIFA World Cup after featuring in Egypt’s previous campaign on the global stage.

The experienced goalkeeper is expected to play a key role as the Pharaohs seek to make a lasting impression and progress further than ever before.

With Salah, Trezeguet and a talented supporting cast, Egypt will be aiming to secure a historic breakthrough and claim what would be one of the nation’s most memorable achievements in World Cup history.

For El Shenawy, the belief is clear: Egypt now possesses the experience, confidence and ambition needed to compete with the best and challenge for a place in the knockout rounds.
