South African trainer Roger De Sa hails Ghana’s ‘unbelievable’ talent pool
Newly appointed Ghana assistant coach Roger De Sa has lauded Ghana’s football talent base, describing the country’s player pool as “unbelievable” despite what he says are clear limitations in infrastructure and resources.
De Sa, who has joined Carlos Queiroz’s technical team following the departure of Otto Addo in March ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, says he has been impressed by the quality available within Ghanaian football since his arrival.
Speaking on the Beyond The Whistle podcast, the former Bafana Bafana assistant coach emphasised that Ghana continues to produce top-level players even under difficult development conditions.
“There is so much natural talent in Ghana despite limited resources. As an African football lover, the talent here is unbelievable. You guys don’t know what you have with limited facilities and infrastructure,” he said.
He also drew comparisons with South Africa, suggesting that while both nations possess gifted players, their development environments differ significantly.
“We in South Africa have talent too, but a different kind with all the facilities. Yet we don’t go forward with our talent,” he added.
Ghana will compete at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America, where they have been drawn in Group L alongside England, Croatia, and Panama.
The Black Stars will open their campaign against Panama in Toronto on June 17, before taking on England in Boston on June 23. Their final group-stage fixture will be against Croatia in Philadelphia on June 27.
In preparation for the tournament, Ghana will play international friendlies against Mexico on May 22 and Wales on June 2 as they fine-tune their squad ahead of the global showpiece.
