Moroccan forward Tawfik Bentayeb says he believes he deserves a place in the Morocco national football team squad ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup following an outstanding season in France.
The 24-year-old striker made the comments during the UNFP Awards ceremony on May 11 after being named in the Ligue 2 Team of the Season.
“Of course, I think about it. I had a good season, and I believe I’m a legitimate candidate for the squad. The coach will decide, but it’s been in the back of my mind all year,” Bentayeb said.
Bentayeb shines in promotion-winning campaign
Bentayeb enjoyed a breakthrough campaign with ES Troyes AC after joining the club on loan from Union Touarga Sport.
The Moroccan striker finished as Ligue 2’s top scorer with 18 goals, playing a crucial role in Troyes’ successful push for promotion to Ligue 1.
His performances throughout the season established him as one of the division’s most consistent attacking threats.
Moroccan striker making strong impression in France
Born and developed in Morocco, Bentayeb built his early football career through local academies before making the move to France.
Known for his physical presence, movement, and finishing ability, the striker has rapidly adapted to European football and is now entering what many consider the prime years of his career.
World Cup dream now within reach
Bentayeb’s impressive form has now placed him firmly in contention for a possible World Cup call-up as Morocco prepare for the tournament in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
National team coach Mohamed Ouahbi is expected to closely monitor the striker’s progress ahead of the final squad selection.
A place in the Atlas Lions squad would mark another major milestone in Bentayeb’s rapidly rising career.
