Kylian Mbappe free to holiday while injured, says Arbeloa
Álvaro Arbeloa has moved to quell criticism surrounding Kylian Mbappé after the forward was pictured on holiday in Sardinia while recovering from injury, insisting the Real Madrid star remains within his rights off the pitch.
Mbappe missed Madrid’s 2-0 win over Espanyol after sustaining a muscle problem in the previous outing against Real Betis.
His absence, however, became a talking point beyond team selection, with sections of the Spanish media questioning his decision not to travel with the squad to the RCDE Stadium.
Instead, the French international spent time on the Italian island with his partner, prompting debate over professionalism and commitment at a crucial stage of the season. Arbeloa was quick to shut down those concerns, emphasising that all injury-related decisions are handled internally.
“All planning regarding injured players is always overseen by Real Madrid’s medical staff, who determine when they need to go to Valdebebas and when they don’t. In his free time, Mbappe can do whatever he sees fit, like any other player,” he said.
Madrid’s victory over Espanyol did little to ease pressure in the title race, with the club trailing Barcelona by 11 points ahead of a decisive meeting between the rivals this weekend.
Mbappe is expected to miss that fixture as well, further complicating Madrid’s hopes of closing the gap.
Recent history offers little encouragement, with Madrid losing five of their last six encounters against Barcelona. Without their leading scorer, the task appears even more demanding.
Mbappe’s injury, understood to be a hamstring issue, is not considered serious, raising the possibility of a swift return.
The 27-year-old has been central to Madrid’s attacking output this season, scoring 41 goals and providing six assists in 41 appearances.
