Two spectators tragically lost their lives on Saturday during the Algerian capital derby between USM Alger and MC Alger due to the collapse of a stand at the Olympic Stadium on July 5, 1962.
The Minister of Sports expressed fury over the incident and emphasized the need to determine responsibilities for the accident. He stated that it is unacceptable for a sports event to end in tragedy, and he pledged that specific measures would be taken by the government.
The minister mentioned that Technical Construction Control (CTC) services would assess the scene of the tragedy, and if necessary, the stadium would be closed immediately. Despite the stadium’s historical significance and hosting of the CAN 1990, it has faced challenges and was due for modernization.
This incident underscores the importance of prioritizing safety measures and maintaining infrastructure at sports venues to prevent such devastating events.
