Gorthi Mokuo switches allegiance to DR Congo

Ajax rising star Gorthi Mokuo has officially pledged his international future to DR Congo, turning his back on Belgium ahead of the 2026 World Cup tournament.

The 20-year-old midfield sensation, currently shining for Ajax Amsterdam, made the decisive call as the Congolese national team intensifies preparations for the upcoming tournament.

Per reports, Mokuo wants to be part of Congo’s historic World Cup campaign and contribute on the biggest stage in football.

Born in Belgium but of Congolese descent, Mokuo had previously represented Belgium at youth level, earning six caps and scoring twice for the Under-21 side. However, the talented defensive midfielder has now opted to reconnect with his roots, a decision that could prove pivotal for a Congolese side brimming with confidence after securing qualification.

The Leopards booked their place at the tournament via the intercontinental play-offs, overcoming Bolivia in a high-stakes clash that sparked wild celebrations back home. Their reward is a challenging Group 11, where they will face heavyweights like Portugal national football team, alongside Colombia national football team and Uzbekistan national football team.

Mokuo’s rise has been nothing short of rapid. After beginning his football journey in the youth ranks of KAA Gent, he secured a move to Ajax’s famed academy in 2024. Just a year later, he broke into the first team—an achievement that underlines both his talent and maturity.

This season, the young midfielder has become a key figure in Ajax’s setup, making 34 appearances across all competitions, while contributing four goals and three assists. Known for his composure, tactical intelligence, and ability to dictate play from deep, Mokuo offers a blend of defensive solidity and attacking support—qualities that make him a valuable addition to the Congolese squad.

His decision is not only a personal milestone but also a statement of intent from DR Congo, who continue to attract dual-national talents as they build a competitive team for the future. With the World Cup on the horizon, Mokuo now has the opportunity to announce himself on the global stage and help write a new chapter in Congolese football history.
