Raïs M’Bolhi’s name is once again being discussed within Algerian football circles as injuries to the national team’s goalkeepers raise the possibility of an unexpected return for the experienced shot-stopper ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

The 40-year-old, who recently stepped away from professional football after signalling his retirement at the end of February, is being viewed by some as a potential emergency option for national team coach Vladimir Petkovic amid an ongoing injury crisis in the goalkeeping department.

Melvin Mastil, Anthony Mandréa and Luca Zidane have all suffered injuries requiring surgery in recent weeks, leaving them sidelined for a significant period of recovery.

The situation has left Algeria short of experienced options in a key position just months before the tournament.

Emergency option emerges

With uncertainty surrounding the availability of several first-choice goalkeepers, attention has turned back to M’Bolhi, one of the most experienced figures in Algerian football history and a key player in the country’s 2014 World Cup campaign in Brazil.

Despite having recently stepped away from the game, the veteran goalkeeper was still active in the first half of the current season with Espérance de Mostaganem.

His recent performances, including a notable display in a goalless draw against Mouloudia d’Oran at the Miloud-Hadefi Stadium, suggested he remains capable of competing at a high level.

That form, combined with his extensive international experience, has led to suggestions that a recall may not be entirely out of the question should the coaching staff require a short-term solution.

At present, no formal approach has been made, but the idea has gained attention due to the lack of fit, senior alternatives available in the squad.

Experience and readiness

One factor in M’Bolhi’s favour is his familiarity with international competition.

Having featured at multiple major tournaments, including the 2010 and 2014 World Cups, as well as several Africa Cup of Nations campaigns, he brings a level of experience unmatched by many current options.

His ability to perform in high-pressure environments has previously been highlighted as one of his strongest attributes, particularly during Algeria’s successful 2014 World Cup run.

Supporters of a possible recall argue that his experience could reduce the need for adaptation time, especially given the short preparation window before the tournament.

Respectful exit from the national scene

Another element being noted is M’Bolhi’s conduct following his gradual departure from the national team setup.

Although he was not included in recent squad selections, including for the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, he did not publicly criticise the decision or the coaching staff.

Instead, he stepped away quietly, maintaining a low profile and avoiding controversy.

This professional approach has been viewed positively by some within the federation, who see it as a sign of his continued commitment to the team’s stability.

His relationship with head coach Vladimir Petkovic has not been publicly strained, despite his exclusion from recent squads.

Influence within the squad

Beyond his playing ability, M’Bolhi is also considered an influential figure within the national team environment.

His experience and leadership qualities have previously made him a respected presence in the dressing room.

He is also known to share a strong relationship with captain Riyad Mahrez, with whom he has maintained close contact over the years, including during periods away from the national team setup.

Such relationships are seen by some observers as an additional factor that could help maintain cohesion within the squad during a demanding tournament period.

Decision remains uncertain

Despite the growing discussion, M’Bolhi himself is not believed to be actively pushing for a return to international football.

Those familiar with his approach describe him as reserved and unlikely to campaign for inclusion, consistent with his long-standing professional attitude.

Throughout his career, he has generally avoided public lobbying or media-driven narratives, preferring to let performances speak for themselves.

Should he be called upon, however, his record of participation in major tournaments would place him among the most experienced Algerian players in history, with the potential to become the only Algerian footballer to feature in three World Cups.

Coach weighs options

For now, Algeria’s coaching staff are monitoring the recovery of their injured goalkeepers while assessing possible alternatives.

The final decision will depend heavily on fitness timelines and squad stability in the coming months.

With the World Cup approaching, the situation remains open, and the possibility of a return for one of Algeria’s most recognisable goalkeepers has not been ruled out entirely.
