Allegri backs Leao despite inconsistency claims after Juventus stalemate
Massimiliano Allegri has offered a firm defence of Rafael Leão, stressing that the AC Milan winger’s inconsistent form should not overshadow his growing influence this season.
Speaking after Milan’s goalless draw with Juventus on Sunday, the coach insisted he remains satisfied with the attacker’s overall contribution, even while acknowledging the fluctuations in his performances. The result itself was a tightly contested affair, but Allegri pointed to Leão as one of the standout performers on the night.
“You can’t expect Leao to have consistent performances,” Allegri said. “He’s never had that, not even 3 or 4 years ago. Against Juventus, he had one of his best performances of the season. He also worked hard defensively and had a good attitude. Players like him have to make a difference, and Rafa has done just that this year, with both assists and goals.”
The remarks underline Milan’s continued reliance on the 25-year-old as a decisive attacking outlet, even as questions persist about his ability to deliver at the same level every week. Against Juventus, however, Leão combined direct attacking threat with improved defensive discipline, a balance Allegri has long demanded from his wide players.
This season, the Portugal international has registered 10 goals and three assists in 28 appearances across all competitions, a return that reflects both his impact and the inconsistency the coach referenced.
While his output remains important in Milan’s push across domestic competitions, the expectation within the club is that his influence must become more sustained if he is to reach the elite tier of European attackers.
