Fulham step up interest in Chibuike Nwaiwu after standout rise in Turkey
Fulham are reportedly stepping up plans for a summer move for Chibuike Nwaiwu following the defender’s rapid emergence as one of the most impressive young centre-backs in Turkey.
The 22-year-old has enjoyed a remarkable start to life at Trabzonspor since completing his switch from Wolfsberger AC in January.
His performances have combined defensive authority with an unexpected attacking threat, particularly in the air, where he has already registered three headed goals in the Süper Lig.
Among his most notable contributions are a decisive winner against Galatasaray and a brace against Fatih Karagümrük, underlining his growing influence at both ends of the pitch. That impact has elevated his standing within the league and attracted attention beyond Turkey.
Analytical platform CIES Football Observatory has recognised his form, ranking him as the top centre-back in Turkey aged 23 or under and the second-best U23 player across the division. Such recognition has only intensified transfer interest ahead of the summer window.
Reports indicate Fulham are closely monitoring Nwaiwu alongside teammate Wagner Pina as they assess defensive reinforcements. The Premier League side are expected to review their options with both Calvin Bassey and Issa Diop entering the final year of their contracts at the end of the campaign.
Interest in Nwaiwu is not confined to England, with Bayer Leverkusen also tracking his development closely. However, any move could prove complicated given his long-term deal with Trabzonspor, which runs until 2030.
Nwaiwu’s growing reputation has also been reflected at international level. He earned a late call-up to Nigeria’s squad in March after Bassey withdrew through injury, offering further evidence of his rising profile.
