Nigeria push for Brentford defender Michael Kayode switch
Nigeria Football Federation has reportedly intensify efforts to convince highly rated Brentford defender Michael Kayode to switch allegiance to represent the Super Eagles at the international level.
Per reports, the domestic football governing body are working behind the scenes to organised a direct meeting with the Brentford defender, as part of a broader recruitment push targeting dual-nationality players.
Nigeria coach Eric Chelle is said to be fully supportive of the move, viewing Kayode as a long-term solution to strengthen the Super Eagles’ defensive depth. The coaching staff reportedly sees the 20-year-old as a modern full-back capable of fitting into Nigeria’s evolving tactical setup.
The planned face-to-face talks are expected to play a key role in presenting the national team project to the player, including his potential role in upcoming international competitions.
Kayode currently represents Italy national under-21 football team at youth level, but remains eligible to switch allegiance to Nigeria due to his family background.
Born in Borgomanero, Italy, to Nigerian parents Victoria and Anthony, the defender holds dual eligibility and has yet to make a senior competitive appearance that would permanently tie him to Italy.
Nigeria’s interest in Kayode reflects a growing trend of recruiting talented players with dual nationality, particularly those developing in Europe’s top leagues. The NFF sees such additions as crucial to boosting squad quality and depth ahead of future qualification campaigns.
While no final decision has been made by the player, the involvement of Chelle and the direct approach from the federation signal a serious intent to sway his choice.
For now, Kayode’s international future remains open—but Nigeria’s courtship is clearly intensifying as they look to secure another promising talent for the Super Eagles setup.
