Ibrahim Adel opens up on Barcelona dream
Egypt international Ibrahim Adel has revealed how the collapse of a dream move to Spain left a lasting impact on him, while also explaining why he turned down interest from Al Ahly SC in pursuit of a career in Europe.
The talented winger, who has been linked with a move to Getafe CF, shared rare insight into his journey during an interview on ON Sports, describing his ambition to play in Europe as the driving force behind his recent decisions.
Adel, who now plies his trade with FC Nordsjælland, admitted that he typically avoids media attention, noting that this marked his first interview since beginning his professional career. However, he used the opportunity to address speculation surrounding his failed transfer, local offers, and his long-term goals.
Getafe Move Collapse and Emotional Blow
The former Pyramids FC star disclosed that his anticipated move to Spain collapsed at the final stage despite assurances that everything had been completed.
“I actually traveled to Madrid, and I was told that everything was 100% done, but I was surprised to be informed later that the deal had been closed.”
He described the moment as a crushing setback, particularly because it brought him within touching distance of a lifelong ambition. The timing of the deal meant he believed he could soon be lining up against FC Barcelona at the iconic Camp Nou, a prospect that made the disappointment even harder to accept.
Responding to Injury Rumours
Adel also addressed rumours suggesting he had faked an injury to facilitate a move abroad, firmly dismissing the claims.
“I cannot feign illness because I fear God in my work, and the injury was real.”
Turning Down Al Ahly to Chase Europe
Despite attracting interest from top Egyptian sides, including Al Ahly, the winger remained focused on his European dream.
“Playing for Al-Ahly is an honor for any player, but I had a clear goal, which was to play professionally in Europe.”
He went on to explain that even after agreeing terms for a potential return to Pyramids, he ultimately chose to stay committed to his ambition of playing abroad. According to Adel, the decision was made after careful consultation and personal conviction, even if it meant accepting a lower salary.
Inside Al Ahly Negotiations
Shedding light on Al Ahly’s approach, Adel revealed that discussions were initiated through Mohamed Elneny, who informed him of the club’s interest. He added that Sayed Abdel-Hafiz was also keen to speak with him directly.
However, with a European move already close to completion at the time, he chose not to engage in negotiations.
Adel further credited Hossam El-Zenaty for helping revive his chances of moving to Europe through Nordsjælland, an opportunity he felt aligned perfectly with his ambitions.
In the end, while expressing gratitude for Al Ahly’s interest, Adel emphasised that his focus never wavered. He made it clear that he avoided financial discussions with the club out of respect for his agreement in Europe and his determination to build a career on the continental stage.
