Serginho backs Leao to win back Milan fans after San Siro backlash
Former AC Milan defender Serginho has thrown his support behind Rafael Leao, insisting the forward still has time to repair his relationship with the Rossoneri faithful despite recent criticism at San Siro.
Leao came under fire from sections of the home crowd following Milan’s heavy defeat to Udinese over the weekend, with audible jeers highlighting growing frustration over his inconsistent performances.
The reaction has intensified speculation about his long-term future at the club, with suggestions emerging that the Portuguese international could be moved on during the summer transfer window.
However, Serginho, who enjoyed a decorated spell with Milan, believes it would be premature to draw firm conclusions about Leao’s future.
He argued that football’s unpredictable nature means fortunes can change rapidly, particularly for players of Leao’s quality and influence.
“Is it right to say goodbye in June? In football, everything changes quickly, and I wouldn’t make any definitive judgments.
“Perhaps Saturday’s boos for Leao will be an extra incentive to prove his worth at the end of this season. Sometimes, a single goal is enough to rekindle the flame. For example, if he scored the decisive goal against Juventus.”
Serginho also pointed to the demanding environment at San Siro, noting that the same supporters who voiced their displeasure have previously celebrated Leao for decisive contributions. He suggested that the forward’s recent struggles should be viewed within the context of fluctuating form rather than a decline in ability.
“San Siro is a demanding stadium that has applauded him many times in the past when he scored and delivered important performances.
“Let’s say that in the last season and a half, Leao hasn’t always managed to express his great potential.”
