LIBYA-ALGERIA INCIDENTS: BOUGHERRA CALMS THINGS DOWN

Bougherra 12

The Libya-Algeria match (0-1) in the first leg of the South Africa 2013 qualifiers concluded with incidents of violence, leading football observers to anticipate a heated return match. However, the captain of the Algerian selection, absent in the first leg, aims to temper expectations.

Madjid Bougherra expresses optimism about the upcoming match, stating, “I sincerely think that the match will be played in excellent conditions and that nothing serious will happen. We have a wonderful public who understands football well and knows how to act in the interest of their selection.” He emphasizes the need to move past the incidents of the previous match and focus on the game ahead. Bougherra acknowledges the unpredictability of football and the lack of certainty in the 0-1 result, cautioning against complacency.

Absent during the first leg but planning to return in October, Bougherra refrains from adding fuel to the fire, particularly concerning the post-match tensions. He attributes the intensity to the nature of derby matches and encourages putting the incidents in Casablanca into perspective. “What happened in Casablanca is not too serious, and we should not amplify things. There was tension, and it is therefore normal for some players to lose control of their nerves.”

Despite the Algerian team’s advantageous position, Bougherra recognizes the challenge posed by the Libyan team, emphasizing, “The Libyan team also remains very tough.” As the return match approaches, the captain maintains a measured and focused outlook, emphasizing the importance of concentration and the unpredictable nature of football.
