Rio Ngumoha gives Liverpool hope ahead of PSG showdown
Rio Ngumoha has given Liverpool fresh belief ahead of their decisive clash with Paris Saint-Germain after becoming the club’s youngest-ever goalscorer at Anfield.
The 17-year-old winger, Rio Ngumoha, found the net in Liverpool’s league win over Fulham FC, marking his second goal of the season and his first at home.
At 17 years and 225 days, he broke the previous record held by Raheem Sterling, underlining his rapid rise within the squad.
Liverpool now face a significant challenge against Paris Saint-Germain at Anfield after suffering defeat in the first leg in Paris.
The performance in that match left them needing a strong response, and Ngumoha’s emergence has added an unexpected dimension to their preparations.
Despite limited involvement so far this season, with only a handful of appearances, the teenager’s recent display has brought him into contention for a role in the crucial encounter.
While a place in the starting line-up appears unlikely, he could still play a part as a substitute, particularly in the closing stages of the match.
Ngumoha’s composure has been notable, with the young forward showing little sign of being affected by the pressure of senior football.
His performance against Fulham earned him the man-of-the-match award, further strengthening his case for involvement.
Liverpool manager Arne Slot acknowledged the player’s readiness while also stressing the importance of managing his development carefully.
“I think he’s ready (to start this kind of match). The question now is whether he can do it again two days later. That’s another question. But can he play and perform at this level? Yes. Now, he’s simply someone I can choose for any match, including Tuesday’s.”
Slot also highlighted the physical demands placed on a player of his age, suggesting that featuring in consecutive high-intensity matches may not yet be realistic.
Liverpool’s selection decisions will be closely watched, particularly after key players such as Mohamed Salah were not used in the first leg. The return fixture presents a different scenario, with the team seeking to overturn the deficit and remain in the competition.
Ngumoha’s breakthrough has provided a timely boost, offering an additional attacking option as Liverpool prepare for one of their most important matches of the season.
Whether he features prominently or not, his emergence has already added a new sense of optimism around the squad.
