CAMEROON: THE SPORTING PUBLIC ASKS BIYA FOR IYA’S HEAD

Paul Biya De Retour 12

The disappointing performance of the Indomitable Lions against Cape Verde in the African Cup of Nations qualifiers continues to stir discontent in Cameroon. The sports community is urging President Paul Biya, who has recently returned from a European visit, to dismiss Mohamed Iya, the president of the Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT), and bring back Eto’o to the team.

The unexpected reaction from the Cameroonian sports public was evident during the reception of President Paul Biya on Monday evening upon his return. Traditionally a time for praise, the public expressed their dissatisfaction. Positioned along the route between the airport and the Unity Palace, signs were held up with messages demanding the resignation of FECAFOOT President Mohamed Iya, the removal of coach Denis Lavagne, and the return of the international striker from Anzhi Makachkala (Russia’s first division club), Eto’o. This reception vividly illustrates the frustration of the sports community in the wake of the Indomitable Lions’ poor results.

Sources suggest that the FECAFOOT president has conveyed to those close to him that he has no intentions of resigning. Furthermore, he has indicated that if President Paul Biya forces him out, he will promptly engage with FIFA. This adds another layer of complexity that could jeopardize the Lions’ chances of qualifying for the upcoming African Football Cup of Nations. In the return match scheduled for October, Cameroon faces the challenge of overturning their fortunes by securing a victory against Cape Verde with a margin of three goals without conceding.
