David Mimbang set to join Saint-Étienne

Cameroonian teenage sensation David Mimbang is on the verge of joining French Ligue 2 outfit AS Saint-Étienne following a standout display at the UNIFFAC U17 tournament, where he emerged as the best Player.

The 16-year-old midfielder has attracted growing attention across Europe following his commanding performances in the regional AFCON U17 qualifiers, where his technical quality, maturity on the ball, and leadership stood out well beyond his age group.

Mimbang’s rise began at the UNIFFAC U17 Tournament, a key qualification pathway for the Africa U17 Cup of Nations. Despite his young age, he quickly emerged as one of the most influential players in the competition, controlling games from midfield and dictating tempo with remarkable composure.

His performances earned him the tournament’s best player award, a recognition that immediately placed him on the radar of several European scouts monitoring emerging African talent.

Following his breakout displays, multiple clubs reportedly expressed interest in securing his signature. However, it is AS Saint-Étienne who have moved decisively to win the race for his services.

The French club, known for their strong tradition of developing young players, are said to have successfully convinced both the player and his representatives of their long-term project. Their track record of nurturing talent into top-level professionals played a key role in sealing the agreement.

According to reports from Cameroonian media, Mimbang is expected to travel to France on Sunday, April 12, to begin the next chapter of his development. Upon arrival, he will initially settle into his new environment before finalising contractual details with the club.

The process is expected to be smooth, with both parties already aligned on the structure of the move. The focus will then shift to helping the teenager adapt to European football, both on and off the pitch.

Saint-Étienne are expected to integrate Mimbang gradually, prioritising his development rather than rushing him into senior action. The club’s academy system has long been regarded as one of the most effective in France, producing players capable of stepping into top-tier football with strong tactical and technical foundations.

For Mimbang, the move represents a significant step forward—transitioning from youth-level dominance in Africa to a structured European development pathway.

At just 16, the Cameroonian midfielder’s journey is only beginning, but expectations are already rising. His performances at youth international level suggest a player with both talent and maturity beyond his years.

If his development continues on its current trajectory, Saint-Étienne may have secured one of Africa’s most promising young midfielders—one capable of making a significant impact in European football in the years to come.
