Zamalek head coach Moataz Gamal has expressed satisfaction after his side secured a narrow 1-0 victory over CR Belouizdad in the first leg of their CAF Confederation Cup semi-final clash on Friday evening.

The Egyptian giants earned a crucial away win in Algeria, taking a slim advantage into the return fixture and moving a step closer to the final of the competition.

Speaking after the match, Gamal acknowledged the difficulty of the encounter while praising the opposition’s quality.

“It was always going to be a tough game for both sides. CR Belouizdad are a strong and respected team with quality players. We used our experience well, imposed our style for most of the match, and achieved the result we needed,” he said.

He stressed that the tie is far from over, urging focus ahead of the second leg in Cairo.

“We’ve completed only the first half of this contest. The second half is still to come at home, and we hope to secure qualification for the final,” he added.

Gamal also lauded his players for their discipline and effort under pressure, noting their ability to execute the game plan.

“The players gave everything. Our objective was to get the best possible result, and they delivered despite the pressure. They handled the responsibility well,” he said.

He further explained tactical adjustments made during the match, including positional rotations involving Juan Bezerra and Adi Al-Dabbagh, designed to maximise attacking efficiency in a tight contest.

On Bezerra’s injury concern, the coach confirmed the midfielder was withdrawn after feeling discomfort in his hamstring.

“He wanted to continue, but we chose not to take risks. We will need him for the return leg,” Gamal noted.

Looking ahead to the second leg at Cairo International Stadium, the Zamalek coach warned against complacency.

“The return match will be very difficult. CR Belouizdad are a modern, well-organised team. Reaching the semi-finals was no accident. The tie is not decided yet, and we must stay fully focused,” he concluded.

The decisive second leg is scheduled for next Friday in Cairo.
