Kompany snubs birthday celebrations with focus fixed on three points
Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany chose restraint over celebration on his birthday, insisting his focus remains firmly on three points as the German giants continue their charge across multiple fronts.
The Belgian, who marked the occasion shortly after a 2-1 victory over Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu, kept attention on football rather than festivities, despite widespread messages of congratulations.
The win against Real Madrid, secured through goals from Harry Kane and Luis Diaz, represented Kompany’s 100th match in charge of Bayern Munich.
His record stands at 76 wins, 13 draws and 11 defeats, underlining a strong start as he seeks to deliver silverware in his debut season. Bayern remain top of the Bundesliga, nine points ahead of Borussia Dortmund.
Asked about his birthday, Kompany was clear in his priorities. “Short answer is no.” He added: “We can only wish for the three points (against FC St Pauli).”
He stressed that his focus remains on results rather than personal milestones, noting that such occasions are better celebrated at later stages of competition. He also hinted at a quiet evening, but insisted preparation comes first.
“I always celebrated birthdays at the stage of semi-finals and quarter-finals so it’s a bonus if you get the wins at these moments.
“I am trying to run away from all the birthday stuff,” he said. “We are in priority mode. At this moment there are enough emotions in the coming days. Maybe some red wine tonight but first prepare for the match.”
Bayern Munich’s demanding schedule continues with a German Cup semi-final against Bayer Leverkusen on April 22, while attention also turns to the Champions League return leg against Real Madrid.
