The Jordanian national football team, under the leadership of Moroccan coach Hussein Amouta, secured a spot in the quarterfinals of the current Asian Cup in football after a thrilling 3-2 victory over Iraq.
The match took place on Monday at Khalifa International Stadium in the Round of 16 of the 2023 Asian Cup held in Doha.
Jordan took the lead with a goal from Yazan Al-Naimat in the 45th minute, but Iraq responded with two goals from Saad Natiq (68) and Ayman Hussein (76).
In the injury time, Jordan staged a dramatic comeback with two crucial goals from Yazan Al-Arab (90+5) and Nizar Al-Rashdan (90+7).
This marks the third time Jordan has reached the quarterfinals, having achieved it previously in 2004 when they exited against Japan in a penalty shootout and in 2011 when they fell to Uzbekistan 1-2.
In the next round, Jordan will face Tajikistan, who defeated the United Arab Emirates in their match held on Sunday.
Iraq reached the Round of 16 after topping Group D with 9 points from three victories: 3-1 against Indonesia, 2-1 against Japan, and 3-2 against Vietnam.
Jordan advanced to the Round of 16 as one of the best third-placed teams, securing four points in Group E by defeating Malaysia 4-0, drawing 2-2 with South Korea, and losing 0-1 to Bahrain, ultimately finishing third behind Bahrain and South Korea.
