Mbekezeli Mbokazi earns Berhalter’s praise after Marathon performance in Chicago Fire win
Chicago Fire defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi has been singled out for special praise by head coach Gregg Berhalter after producing a tireless display in his side’s 1–0 victory over Nashville in Major League Soccer.
The centre-back completed the full 90 minutes despite the demanding circumstance of a 21-hour flight from South Africa, underlining his resilience and commitment to the team.
The South African performance helped Chicago secure their third clean sheet in six league matches this season.
Mbokazi’s efforts came just days after he featured for Bafana Bafana, where he scored in a 2–1 defeat to Panama in Cape Town.
Despite the quick turnaround and extensive travel, the highly rated defender was immediately named in Chicago’s starting lineup and delivered another assured showing.
Following the match, Berhalter publicly commended the 24-year-old during the post-match team address.
In a video shared on the club’s Facebook page, the coach highlighted Mbokazi’s extraordinary effort, noting the difficulty of playing a full match after such a long journey, while expressing pride in the squad’s overall performance.
“Mbo is coming from a 21-hour flight and he’s playing 90 minutes…” He added: “You can’t write this. This is why it’s such a great win. I am really proud of you guys.”
The victory ended Nashville’s unbeaten start to the season and moved Chicago Fire within three points of the top of the MLS Eastern Conference standings, further boosting their push in the league.
