Ivorian forward Matthis Bolly retires at 35 after globe-trotting career
Former Ivory Coast national football team forward Matthis Bolly has officially announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 35, bringing an end to a career that spanned multiple countries and memorable moments on the international stage.
Bolly, who had been without a club since his departure from Lillestrøm SK, confirmed the decision on Monday, 6 April, through an emotional message shared on his Instagram account.
Bolly, who earned five caps for the Elephants, was part of the Ivory Coast squad at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil — a highlight that remains one of the defining moments of his career. Known for his pace, versatility, and attacking flair, he carved out a respectable career across Europe, representing a number of clubs and leaving his mark in different leagues.
In his farewell message, Bolly reflected on a journey filled with gratitude and cherished memories:
“So many wonderful memories to look back on! Thank you to my childhood clubs Lyn, Oppsal and Holmlia, the Lillestrøm youth team and all the senior clubs I had the pleasure of playing for. Teammates with whom I shared the dressing room and all the friends I made along the way. And for having worn the national team jersey – a source of immense pride for me! And last but not least, to everyone who has supported me along the way. Takk! Thank you! Ayoka!”
His career began in Norway, where he developed through the ranks at local clubs before rising to prominence. Over the years, Bolly’s journey took him across Europe, where he experienced different football cultures and competitions, building a reputation as a hardworking and dynamic forward.
While he may not have reached the very pinnacle of global football, his contributions at both club and international level earned him respect and admiration, particularly for his commitment and professionalism.
Now stepping away from the game, Bolly leaves behind a story of perseverance, international experience, and pride in representing his country on the world stage.
