Lothar Matthäus has launched a pointed critique of Vinícius Júnior, accusing the Real Madrid forward of excessive theatrics and poor sportsmanship ahead of Bayern Munich’s crucial Champions League encounter in the Spanish capital.

With Bayern Munich set to face Real Madrid in the first leg of their quarter-final tie, Matthäus used the build-up to shift attention onto the Brazilian winger’s on-field conduct, suggesting it detracts from his undeniable talent.

Speaking to Sky Deutschland, the former Bayern captain did not hold back in his assessment of one of Madrid’s most influential players.

“Vinicius is, of course, a great player, but he’s constantly provoking. When someone makes a decent tackle on him, he just complains and whines.”

Matthäus, a World Cup winner with Germany and one of the most respected voices in European football, framed his criticism within a broader concern about professionalism and respect at the highest level of the game.

His comments arrive at a time when Vinícius continues to play a pivotal role for Madrid, both as a match-winner and a lightning rod for opposition defenders.

The German great did not limit his remarks to the player alone. He also revisited the controversy surrounding Real Madrid’s decision to boycott the 2024 Ballon d’Or ceremony, after their star forward missed out on the top prize.

The award ultimately went to Rodri of Manchester City, a result that sparked visible frustration within the Madrid camp.

“Rodri was chosen and they (Real Madrid) said: ‘It’s unfair. One of ours (Vinicius) should have won. We’re boycotting him.’ And that’s not right. Out of respect for the opponent, the other teams, and the other players,” said Matthäus.

In his view, such actions risk undermining the spirit of competition and the collective values that define elite football. He suggested that Real Madrid, despite their storied history and success, may be losing perspective in moments that demand humility and respect.

He also pointed out that “in a way, you lose sight of the bigger picture. So I don’t like how Real Madrid has been in recent year”.
