Mario Balotelli calls for a reset of Italy national team after World Cup qualification failure
Amid the shockwaves of Italy missing the World Cup for the third consecutive time, Mario Balotelli has called for a reset of the Azzurri.
The Al-Ettifaq striker did not shy away from the country’s painful reality following the 4-1 penalty shootout defeat to Bosnia and Herzegovina in the qualifiers.
Balotelli, ironically still remembered as the scorer of Italy’s last World Cup goal against England in 2014, described the current era as a “dark tunnel” of missed opportunities and goal-scoring drought.
In an interview with Emirati newspaper Al Bayan, he stressed that the slump, though bitter, presents a unique chance to rebuild Italian football from the ground up.
The striker called for an end to the traditional hesitation in promoting young talent, arguing that faith in the next generation must come early, without waiting for conventional “maturity.”
He believes the Italian system has the technical skills, but what it lacks is a coach with genuine “human charisma” to unite the dressing room and foster cohesion.
“Italy is going through a natural cycle of peak and decline, but faith in the new generation is the cornerstone of any future renaissance,” Balotelli stated, emphasising the importance of a cultural as well as tactical overhaul.
Despite the sting of defeat, Balotelli remains optimistic. He highlighted that history proves great football powers may stumble, but they do not vanish. Italy’s revival, he believes, is inevitable if the rebuilding phase is managed thoughtfully.
Balotelli’s own international record of 14 goals in 36 appearances remains a reminder of his brilliance, with his memorable performance against Germany in Euro 2012 standing out as a beacon of what Italian football once represented and could achieve again.
This is Balotelli’s call to tear down outdated structures, trust the young, and build a new Italy ready to reclaim its rightful place on the world stage.
