Morocco defender Nayef Aguerd close to a return from injury
Olympique de Marseille head coach Habib Beye has acknowledged that his side is yet to reach the desired level ahead of their crucial Ligue 1 clash against AS Monaco.
Speaking before Sunday’s encounter, Beye admitted that performances have been “still unsatisfactory,” but maintained that securing a UEFA Champions League spot remains a clear objective for the team as the season approaches its decisive phase.
Key Absences for Monaco Clash
Marseille will head into the fixture without several important players. Geoffrey Kondogbia has been ruled out due to a thigh injury, while Mason Greenwood continues his recovery and is not yet ready to return to action.
These absences present a challenge for Beye as he looks to field a competitive side in a high-stakes match with significant implications for European qualification.
Aguerd Boost After Surgery
There was, however, encouraging news regarding Nayef Aguerd. The Moroccan defender has resumed training after undergoing surgery for a sports hernia last month and is gradually reintegrating into the squad.
Reports from RMC Sport had earlier indicated that Aguerd had been dealing with the issue for some time, with the condition stemming from repeated physical strain. His recovery is progressing well, offering Marseille a timely defensive boost.
Beye also confirmed that Leonardo Balerdi is nearing a full return to group training, further strengthening the team’s options at the back.
Champions League Race Intensifies
Both Marseille and Monaco head into the encounter with their sights set on closing the gap to the Champions League places. Marseille currently sit fourth with 49 points, holding a narrow advantage over Monaco, who trail closely in seventh.
With little separating the two sides, Sunday’s showdown could prove decisive in shaping the race for European qualification as the Ligue 1 season nears its conclusion.
