Algerian forward Mohamed Amine Amoura is facing growing scrutiny after extending his goal drought during VfL Wolfsburg’s 6-3 defeat to Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga.
While Leverkusen’s attacking display dominated the contest, attention has increasingly turned to Amoura’s struggles in front of goal.
The 25-year-old once again failed to find the net, continuing a run that has now reached eight matches for both club and country.
There had been hope that the recent international break in March, particularly Algeria’s fixture against Guatemala, would offer the striker an opportunity to rediscover his scoring form.
Instead, his difficulties at club level appear to have carried over into international duty, raising concerns about his current effectiveness.
Signs of a decline first emerged during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, where Amoura was unable to score in four appearances, registering only a single assist.
This contrasted sharply with his earlier performances in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, where he had recorded 10 goals and established himself as a key attacking figure.
However, the lack of goals has persisted. He was unable to score in subsequent appearances against Guatemala and Uruguay, despite Algeria producing a high-scoring display in one of those matches. Notably, he did not contribute to the team’s tally in the seven-goal performance against Guatemala.
Back at club level, the pressure has intensified. Wolfsburg, currently positioned near the relegation zone, looked to their attacking players for inspiration in a difficult away fixture.
Amoura started the match but was unable to deliver the decisive contribution expected of him, despite winning a penalty.
Throughout the game, he missed several clear chances, reflecting a lack of confidence in key moments.
His frustration was evident, including a tense exchange with a teammate over positioning during a set-piece situation.
Despite retaining his pace and movement, the absence of goals has become a defining issue.
The extended drought suggests that the challenge may not only be linked to team performance but also to individual form.
